Supplies You’ll Need
Making Christmas garlands is easy with just a few basic supplies:
-
Greenery – The base of the garland. Good options are cedar, pine, fir, magnolia, eucalyptus etc. Purchase bundles from craft stores for convenience.
-
Ribbon – 1-2″ wide ribbon in your choice of colors/patterns.
-
Decorations – Ornaments, pinecones, flowers, berries etc. to embellish the garland.
-
Floral wire – For attaching elements together.
-
Scissors & wire cutters – To cut materials as needed.
-
Zip ties – To securely attach the garland to your door.
-
Adhesive – Hot glue gun, craft glue etc. for decorations.
-
Command hooks – To hang swags or garlands.
That’s all you really need to make a show-stopping Christmas garland for your door. Now let’s go over the step-by-step process.
Choose Your Greenery
The greenery forms the shape and structure of the garland base:
-
Pick flexible branches that bend without breaking.
-
Mix textures like pine, magnolia leaves, eucalyptus etc. for visual interest.
-
Buy enough so you have plenty of flexibility in designing.
-
For loose greenery, estimate 1-2 bundles per foot of garland.
Popular base options:
-
Cedar – Soft, feathery texture and pleasant scent.
-
Pine – Fuller, bolder branches for a traditional look.
-
Fir – Classic Christmas tree shape.
-
Magnolia – Large, pretty leaves make a statement.
-
Eucalyptus – Adds unique blue-green color.
Start with high-quality greenery for the best looking foundation.
Add Ribbon
Ribbon covers stems and adds a pop of color:
-
Use 1-2” wide ribbon in your choice of patterns/solids.
-
Wrap ribbon around bundles, overlapping edges slightly.
-
Twist ribbon at the base to secure it.
-
Tie periodic bows for visual interest.
-
Choose colors to coordinate with your door/home.
-
Buffalo check or plaid patterns evoke a cozy, classic Christmas vibe.
Embellish with Decorations
Now for the fun part – embellishing with ornaments, flowers and other accents:
-
Pinecones – Large ones make a dramatic statement. Paint or glitter them for extra flair.
-
Ornaments – Opt for shatterproof plastic or wood. Secure them well so they don’t fall.
-
Berries – Faux red or white berry stems add festive pops of color.
-
Flowers – Go for poinsettias, velvety roses, or carnations.
-
Bows & bells – Wire in festive bows, jingle bells etc. for cheer.
-
Greenery accents – More fir, eucalyptus etc. helps fill things in.
Mix and match elements to create your own custom style. Get creative!
Shape the Garland
Now assemble all the pieces into your garland shape:
-
For a wreath – Wire greenery into a circle then decorate around it. Add a big bow at the bottom if desired.
-
For a garland – Wire greenery bunches together in a long line end-to-end. Drape ribbon down the center then embellish.
-
For a swag – Make loose bunches of decorated greenery. Connect them with wire into a swag form.
Shape garlands to perfectly fit your door by bending wire, trimming pieces or using command hooks to hang. Check placements to determine lengths needed.
Attach Your Garland
Once fully decorated, securely attach your garland outside:
-
For wreaths, use a decorative wreath hanger on the back.
-
For garlands/swags, adhere with sturdy zip ties to prevent wind/rain damage. Place a tie every 6-12 inches.
-
For doors without frames, use removable command hooks to hang.
Check attachments periodically and re-secure garlands over the season as needed.
Stand back and admire your gorgeous custom Christmas door garland!

Materials for DIY outdoor garland
The very first step I took was to clip all of my evergreens into more manageable pieces to add to the faux garland. I hung the faux garland around my doorway using the Command hooks linked above. They work well outdoors and won’t damage your door frame, and when it’s time to put Christmas away, I can remove the clips too!
When adding the fresh clippings, I use either the faux garland itself or the garland ties. Hot tip: you can clip the garland ties and get even more use out of them. I found I didn’t need the full length available.
I alternated the 3 types of evergreens and started from the center so that they look as though they ‘fall’ on either side of the door.
